Many of my clients still struggle with the idea of bringing their businesses online. One of the questions that comes up a lot is: "Why does my business need Social Media?"

I've put together a list of five reasons why social media is essential for your business (small or large):
1. Increases brand awareness. "Brand Awareness is the extent to which a brand is recognized by potential customers, and is correctly associated with a particular product." Do you have a product or a service that you want to sell? Creating brand awareness is one of the key steps in promoting a product. Increase brand awareness to create more visibility for your product or service so you can generate more sales.

2. Create and share Social Media to build backlinks. Do you own a website? Link building is perhaps the most important activity you can do for the SEO success of your site. Using social network sites to create quality backlinks it's almost a must these days. Social media sites have a tremendous impact on search engine rankings and they can drive you loads of traffic.

3. Increases sales revenues. Social Media is a great marketing tool for interacting with your customers and providing them with extra value surrounding your brand. Even though Social Media is not a quick fix to increase sales, if done the right way, in time, will translate into increased sales.

4. Takes Customer Relationships To The Next Level. Now you have your audience online, you have a voice, your audience perceives you as a person and feels that has a relationship with you. Customers would rather buy from a company that they feel they have a relationship with, they know and trust, rather than some faceless corporation. Keep connected, offer high quality services and products and you'll skyrocket your customer's loyalty.

5. Increases your customer base. There are many ways -free and paid- to go after your target client using social media so building your own tribe on different social networks it's really not that complicated. Direct potential clients from social media sites to your website and you'll see your customers data base expanding easily and steadily.

It's also important, once your business has made the decision to join the conversation on networking sites, to have a well thought out strategy. Having defined goals at the beginning will help you to measure progress and your ROI.
